Writers wanted for daytime drama: script writing experience required, intense dislike of mother figures a definite plus.
That could easily be the ad for writers for AMC. What else could account for the plethora of bad mothers in Pine Valley?
And I am not talking about Erica, who frankly does a decent job for a narcissist. Or Brooke, who has now twice betrayed little Maddie's confidences by telling Edmund about them.
No, I am talking about Dixie, Liza and Vanessa. I never bought into Dixiebelle's reputation a great mother. True, she can make a mean chili dog but JR has consistently paid for the messes in her personal life. And now it is clear that she will be leaving town to have her baby. What about all her concern for JR? Has she thought about what his life will be like with Adam? Or with his increasingly cold stepmother Liza? Or the fact that he is still dealing with the fallout from his drug problems? Or his angst over Tad and Dixie's divorce? And here is my main gripe, how the hell did she get pregnant in the first place? Well, OK, I know how, but why? Why, when her doctors repeatedly told her that a pregnancy could kill her didn't she have her tubes tied? It seems to me that would have been fulfilling a responsibility to her firstborn. Oh well, I can only hope that her doctors' prognosis is correct.
Liza, Liza, Liza. Could you please explain to me one more time about how you are "doing all this" for your daughter? Would that include using Colby's custody as bricolage in threatening Adam? I do not know how Adam can breathe in his own house, for fear of making some misstep. Of course, you are the only judge of what those missteps might be. It is wrong for Adam to lie to the police to protect his son JR, but it is acceptable for you to lie to the FBI to protect your "friend" Ryan. Have I got that right, Liza?
Vanessa beats both Dixie and Liza in the bad mother department. And she does it while being better dressed than either of them, too. There is something so delightfully wicked in the way she says, "Never fear, mother is here." Like all classic bad mothers, she insists that she does it all for her children. If she had not goaded David's father into shooting himself, David would not be the successful cardiologist he is today. And if she had left Leo in school, instead of making him a fixture in caf? society, he might not know the proper wine to order with dinner. Horrors! Well, actually there are worse horrors in store for Vanessa's sons, especially Leo. One of his core beliefs was that he and Vanessa were partners all those years in Europe. That they were more than mother and son (although not as much more as Vanessa would have liked), they were partners. And that is a lie. Proteus has no partners. Vanessa used Leo in ways he has yet to discover. Used him, yet was also obsessed with him in very non-maternal way. More and more Vanessa reminds me of the worst mother ever depicted on film, Mrs.Iselin (portrayed by Angela Lansbury) in The Manchurian Candidate. Any minute I expect Vanessa to suggest that Leo deal himself a hand of solitaire.
David is not playing solitaire, but he and Anna are not exactly playing hearts either. Considering that her first two husbands were murdered, it is probably a good thing for David's longevity that they are not rushing into anything. When she was on GH, Anna was a good mother. Well, as good a mother as a spy can be. Now that she is on AMC, it is not surprising that her maternal instincts are nil. When was the last time she spoke with Robin anyway?
Maybe instead of All My Children we should be calling it All My Bad Mommas.
Quibble, Quibble
1. When did David move his cabin closer to town? I thought he chose it for its isolation. Now he is showering and making it to PV Hospital "in minutes."
2. Is the person who keeps the fire burning on the beach the same person who keeps the candles lit in the Wildwind Crypt and the batteries fresh at the boathouse?
3. If Ryan protecting Hayley is supposed to be a secret, wouldn't going to the prison with her be just a bit of a tip-off to Proteus?
4. Wouldn't it be wonderfully ironic if Vanessa's odd breathing patterns were caused by the same heart condition as Dixie's, and David's research wound up saving his much loathed mother's life?
5. What happened to the electrifying security system on David's computer? How did Jake access the research files without the password?
6. I think it was really nice of the prison guards to let Mateo go to abc.com/daytime so he could order Hayley's necklace.
7. Jake, you are worried about David destroying PV Hospital. I am worried about you destroying the English language. It is not "you and me will sail on out of here." It is "you and I will sail on out of here."
8. Why can I never find an ocean front beach when I visit western Pennsylvania?
Do you think Vanessa will wind up in Oak Haven, prison or having her hair done at the Glamorama? As always, I love hearing what you think.
